What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling‑based martial art that evolved from Japanese jiu‑jitsu and judo, then grew into its modern form in Brazil through the pioneering work of the Gracie family. It’s a system built on leverage, positioning, and intelligent technique—proving that skill can overcome size and strength, and that control, not chaos, wins the fight.
Today, BJJ is practiced worldwide by hobbyists, athletes, and elite competitors, valued for its effectiveness, strategy, and ability to build confidence both on and off the mats.
We are proudly part of the Renzo Gracie lineage.
At Honey Badger Muay Thai & BJJ, we carry on that legacy through our direct affiliation with Renzo Gracie OAMA, led by Professor Pat Cooligan — Canada’s first Renzo Gracie black belt. Our head instructor earned his black belt under Professor Cooligan in Rio de Janeiro, the birthplace of Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu, with his rank personally confirmed by Master Renzo Gracie himself.
Our teaching is shaped by experience training under some of the most respected names in Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu — including Renzo Gracie, Royce Gracie, Rener Gracie, and Royler Gracie — blending old‑school lineage with modern combative evolution.
Our Mission
We’re honoured to bring the first black‑belt‑level Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu academy to Essex, offering a standard of instruction typically found only in large urban centres. Our coaching team brings a blend of high‑level experience across Brazilian Jiu‑Jitsu and other martial arts — including international ranking, advanced technical training, and years of mentorship under world‑class instructors.
But competition is only part of the picture. In today’s rapidly changing and unpredictable world, we focus the majority of our training on reality‑based scenarios: practical self‑defence, situational control, and threat de‑escalation. This is Jiu‑Jitsu for the real world — not just the tournament mats.
